Atlas were defeated 3-1 away to their relegation rivals Lobos BUAP on Saturday in a match that increased their chances of going down. Although Milton Caraglio opened the scoring for the visitors, a second-half strike from Jeronimo Amione and a double from Julian Quinones were enough to secure all three points for the home team. Ruben Omar Romano’s side have won only once in the league this season. They are currently languishing at the bottom of the table with a meagre three points from six games.
Necaxa secured an important away victory against Cruz Azul on Saturday, with goals from Dieter Villalpando and Carlos Gonzalez. Ignacio Ambriz’s side have won eight points from six games. They will have to improve their record at home in order to move forward into the knockout stages of the competition as only two of those points have been secured on their own ground.
Atlas have only claimed victory once in their last six league matches at home. Necaxa, on the other hand, have won three of their last five league games on their travels. Given that fact, the visitors should come into the contest as clear favourites.
In their last five league outings, Atlas have been involved in three four-goal matches and Necaxa have played two during that time. Atlas have conceded 13 so far this season – the second worst in Liga MX, and with those defensive weaknesses in mind, a four-goal scoreline would come as no surprise on Tuesday.
Necaxa have won two and lost none of their last four games against Atlas. Necaxa claimed a 2-1 home win when the teams met last August.
